This petition urges the School Board of Gurnee District 56 to reinstate Spanish education in the middle school curriculum.
Why is language education an important option for the middle school students of Gurnee District 56? Here are a few points to consider:
1. Foreign language instruction is included is the Educate America Act: “By the year 2000, all students will leave grades 4, 8, and 12 having demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter including . . . foreign languages, . . . and every school in America will ensure that all students learn to use their minds well, so they may be prepared for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment in our Nation's modern economy. (Goal 3)
2. Early language instruction begins the development of an ability to communicate with more people; the earlier that instruction begins, the more likely it is that fluency will be achieved.
3. Students who study language typically average higher scores on college entrance examination.
4. Students of foreign languages develop an appreciation of other cultures.
5. Fluency in another language increases career options after high school or college.
The signers of this petition agree that language instruction is an important option in the Gurnee District 56, and respectfully request that the School Board restore it to the middle school curriculum. |
