Reinstate the observation of Columbus Day at U.C. Santa Barbara!

Not so many years ago, the observation of Columbus Day, a nationally recognized holiday, was removed from the school calendar and replaced with "Indigenous People's Day."

Caesar Chavez Day, IS honored.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day IS honored.

So why remove Columbus Day as a recognized holiday from the calendar? And why replace it with "Indigenous People's Day?"

The answer is: a concerted effort on the part of some bigoted groups to deny European-American students the right to celebrate one of their own cultural heroes.

This is entirely unacceptable and it CAN and WILL be changed!!

We of European ancestry made up 56% of the overall student population as of the Fall 2006 quarter. This being the case, how and why do we allow bigoted special-interest groups and a PC-obsessed school administration to attempt to deny us our right to engage in cultural pride, the very same sort that is encouraged in other racial groups amongst the student population?

We European-Americans have as much right as any other students to engage in the constructive celebration of one of our cultural heroes. U.C. Santa Barbara MUST afford us the same respect and dignity as is afforded all other students.

We, the undersigned, absolutely DEMAND the reinstatement of the observation of Columbus Day at U.C. Santa Barbara!
