At Hingham High School, students are encouraged to demonstrate hard work and a high level of commitment. They are given a weight Grade Point Average to present to colleges that help influence decisions regarding admission. However, GPA is not weighted and scaled uniformly throughout the country; the same number GPA at HHS could be considered much higher or lower at other schools in the United States due to different methods of scaling. This is where class rank comes into effect. Class rank is instituted in a large majority of high schools not only in Massachusetts but nationally as well. It helps colleges see how a student compares to his/her classmates. If a school does not use class rank in its evaluation of its students, then colleges are more wary to accept applying students as this helpful comparison is not provided. Hingham High School does not currently implement class rank, and it is substantially harming the hardworking and intelligent students enrolled there. Many students want the best chance they can have at getting into their dream college, and their hard work can be appreciated fully if colleges can ‎ better understand the scale of their intellectual achievement. Class rank also inspires competition among the students which in turn improves grades and the overall academic standard. Please sign this petition, and make HHS like so many other high schools in the country. Give the students the best tools they can utilize to succeed.
