Name: Melissa Widzinski on Apr 12, 2009Comments: The copyright system surrounding audio recordings is absolutely dysfunctional. As a musician, student and aspiring audio archivist, and would not want to see the precious, unique (and deteriorating) audio recordings housed at my university lost forever, due to this system. Audio recordings are pivotal to our history, serving in ways that plain words could never match. It would be a shame if precious recordings were relegated to collecting dust and cobwebs on a shelf, locked away for good. Please help so that we can listen to and learn from historic recordings!!Flag

Name: Paul T. Jackson on May 20, 2009Comments: I suspect because of the plethora of laws and limitations on re-recording of recordings that most do what they want to do regardless of the laws. When things are so obtuse and complicated laws tend to be ignored, and are in fact ignored. We need specific language that respects composers, performers, manufacturers, but allows for preservation and some individual copying that is sometimes disallowed because of the AF of M rulings as well.Flag

Name: Brandon Burke on Jun 18, 2009Comments: US copyright law (especially the three-copy limit) prevents my institution from preserving unique and historical recorded sound materials at best practice specification. Best practices exist for a reason. We should expect to lose significant portions of our recorded sound heritage if these laws are not amended. I praise the work of the Historical Recording Coalition for Access and Preservation.Flag
