Name: Jennifer Siegel on May 14, 2012Comments: I just returned to live in Quebec after living in BC for a few years. I got married in the US and changed my last name to my husband's when we returned to BC. I have all of my documents in my married and I'm very proud to have taken his name. Most countries in the world I believe allow the woman to take her husband's and I think it should be up to the woman to decide and not the government and some angry feminists. It's been a really pain in the butt to get my documents here and I feel robbed of my rights by not being able to keep my married name. I'm already starting to regret moving and buying a place in Quebec.Flag

Name: James T. H. Williams on Jun 1, 2012Comments: The adoption of the married name to a Family Unit is a fundamental part of the identity of the entire family. Which name is the child to take to feel as though they are part of a single unit? Mom's, Dad's or a hyphenated name. What about the next generation having children? Will there be two hyphenated names, then hyphenated together such as my son being Alexander Webster-Williams, and as a hyothetical, his wife being Jones-McElroy, his son would naturally take both names to honour both children as John Jones-McElroy-Webster-Williams? That seems a little much for my grandchildren. How about Great Grandchildren? 8 Hyphenated last names to honour the family unit? The singular Family Unit, by "Family Name", is not only a logical union, but a psychological building block for Unity. The only proponents of this law are those that also agree with the following joke: I name all my boys John, and my daughters Jane. Her friend asks "what if you only want an individual one", and she replies "then I use their last name".Flag

Name: Andrea Audet on Jun 5, 2012Comments: I fully support this petition and hope the law in Section 393 of the Civil Code of Québec will soon be modified accordingly. Please take a moment or two to review and amend Section 393 of the Civil Code of Québec that states women and men in Québec must exercise their civil rights under their maiden name. Married women (and men) shouldn't have to be "told" by law what surname they can or can't use, this is unlawful and also discriminatory, in my view. Furthermore, not only should women and men be allowed to do this, they should have FREEDOM OF CHOICE. While exercising their civil rights, a spouse should legally have the choice of using their maiden name or that of their spouse's if they so wish. Requesting such an amendment to the Civil Code of Québec, Section 393 is only reasonable considerding we are living in the 21st century. I believe that such unlawful and discriminatory content as it stands right now has no place in a democratic society such as Québec. Note that I am not asking to remove the usage of a maiden name by a spouse should they chose to do so, I am merely asking they be given the choice of using either one. Lastly if, for example, the following were to be the amended clause in Section 393: "One (woman or man) may not change their status back to using their maiden or married name once they have requested the change, unless the two parties involved either have officially divorced or have a reason that may otherwise threaten or have deadly consequences upon the individual involved", I would be happy. Thank you, AndreaFlag
