Dr. Killion, Mrs. Bowers, and School Board of Trustees,

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, HEREBY PETITION YOU TO PROVIDE A QUALITY PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM AS DETERMINED BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SPORT AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION (NASPE) FOR THE STUDENTS OF CUMBERLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. SPECIFICALLY, WE ASK THAT THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS TO BE ESTABLISHED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE 2010-2011 ACADEMIC YEAR:

  1. All physical education classes taught by a highly qualified teacher with an undergraduate degree and certification/licensure in physical education;
  2. All students receive formal instruction in physical education for at least three class periods per week for all grades in the entire school;
  3. Physical education class sizes identical to other content areas to ensure safe, effective instruction;
  4. Adequate equipment for every student to be active;
  5. Appropriate technology incorporated on a regular and continuing basis;
  6. Indoor and outdoor facilities that are safe and adequate so that physical education classes need not be displaced by other activities;
  7. A written mission statement and sequential curriculum based on state and/or national standards;
  8. Formative and summative assessments of student learning in the physical education curriculum, and they are related to meaningful content objectives;
  9. Program that provides for maximum participation for every student (e. g., inclusion, no elimination games, all students active at once, developmentally appropriate activities, etc.);
  10. Systematic development of the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional aspects of each student;
  11. Regular participation in physical education professional development activities and annual membership in related professional organizations for all teachers;
  12. Physical education teachers receive student health information and have a plan for handling emergencies;
  13. Regular periodic evaluation by administrators of the physical education program and teacher performance;
  14. Physical education teachers engage in communication with other educators, administration, and parents on a frequent basis;
  15. Physical education teachers seek feedback for improvement from students, peers, and parents as a means for program evaluation and improvement.

In short, the signers of this petition demand that the administration of the West Lafayette Community School Corporation provide each child with a quality education, across the curriculum, with no exceptions.
