Queen Mary: Sell Your Arms

Queen Mary has shares in arms companies.

These include £300,000 in Smiths Group; £33,000 in Cobham; and £160,000 in GKN.

These shares total approximately half a million, and fund the development and production of flight controls and engine components at Smiths, missile parts at Cobham, and components of the Eurofighter and the US air force’s F/A-22 fighter - part of the next generation of combat aircraft - at GKN.

Any kind of investment in arms companies sends out a clear message of support to the trade in death; Queen Mary on the other hand, is an educational institution and should be divorced from all such activity. Arms companies sell their goods on a global market to any country that has the money, however poor its human rights record.

It’s easy and profitable to have an ethical investment policy, and a simple first step is to sell these shares.

A student campaign at the School of Oriental and African Studies, also part of the University of London, led to their university selling its arms shares.
