A comprehensive poverty reduction plan for Ontario requires providing adequate income supports for everyone! As a first step towards providing healthy incomes to all people in Ontario, I am calling on Premier McGuinty to introduce $100 monthly healthy food supplement to all adults on social assistance. Despite existing benchmarks that measure the cost of decent shelter and nutritious food, there remains no transparent or rational criterion for setting social assistance rates in Ontario. As a result, people on social assistance are being forced to choose between paying rent and buying food, are sending their children to school without breakfast or lunch, and are relying on food banks for survival. It's time to put food in the budget!
