The Birmingham City Council has confirmed that the library will remain under public operation. This result secures the institution as a truly communal resource for all residents. We must remain attentive to ensure this commitment is upheld in the years to come.

The prestigious Library of Birmingham is to open in September 2013 and is a significant public investment. The Library will be an important cultural resource for all the people of Birmingham Libraries are universal and public services open to everyone. But Birmingham City Council is allowing private companies to tender to run our new Library. That is to privatise the running of the Library and other important Library services, including the archive. Privatisation means we end up paying more for worse services. Where Private companies are allowed to make profit from running public services it leads to poorer services for the public and a worsening of the terms and conditions of Library workers. We call on Birmingham City Council to keep the running of the Library of Birmingham public

The council has yet to provide a formal response regarding the delegation of library operations to private firms. I am continuing to compile documentation that highlights the inherent risks of this privatization strategy for our community resources.

The momentum behind this effort proves that the public values accessible knowledge over corporate interests. Your dedication confirms that our library must remain a protected asset for the entire community.

Keep our libraries public. Private companies just want to squeeze every penny out of the staff and the books. Disgraceful.

Privatisation always ends in disaster. Look at what happens to the service quality when they start cutting corners to save cash.

Libraries should belong to the people not some company looking to make a quick buck. Leave it alone.
