Many Veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have been diagnosed with PTSD. Some chose to go to the VA to receive help with this, and in some cases, the VA sends a letter to the court which causes the Vet to be "Adjudicated as Mentally Defective." This has serious consequences other than the Veteran not being able to buy a firearm. Veterans with this label who have a security clearance as well will lose their clearance, and it is takes a lot of time AND money spent on lawyers to possibly get their clearance back. Vets know this. As a result some will not receive the treatment they need, making their health worse. If Veterans with this label had a chance to appeal this by showing their conditions had improved, and get the record expunged, more vets would come forward for help.
