As a Penn State student, I signed up for season football tickets, which I received today, August 4, 2003. Enclosed with my tickets was a letter informing me of the new Penn State validation policy for student football tickets. It states: Any non-PSU person wishing to purchase a student ticket must pay an additional $20 fee to Penn State in order to sit with the students. I find this policy to not only be unfair, but ridiculous as well. My reasons are as followed: #1) Student tickets are scalped all the time, and it is very rare to purchase a ticket at face value. Most of the time, you can expect to pay at least $40 a ticket, even weeks in advance of the game. Example: Student tickets for the Nebraska game were being scalped for upwards of $125. Now, you want to charge us an additional $20 PSU is just as bad as the scalpers. #2) The ID policy has been around for a long time, but it only began to be enforced last year. They told us that it was for our safety, which was placed in jeopardy after September 11th. Now, they\'re using the ID policy as an excuse to make more money. #3) EVERY PSU student is presented with the opportunity to buy season football tickets. The students are the ones who choose to buy or not. In the end, all of the student season tickets are allotted to only current students. I understand that some students are turned away, but that is not because they did not have the opportunity. Some students just do not see football tickets as a top priority, while others only wish to attend a game or two. Why should these people get preference in a FREE market Penn State students already had the opportunity to purchase tickets, but chose not to seize it. #4) Lastly, these are our friends and family that we are inviting to the game. If I spend days searching for a ticket for my friend, who is driving three hours from another college to see our football team play, why should she have to pay an additional $20 We searched for the ticket. We arranged the sale. We were forced to pay more than face value. And now, on top of all of that, you want us to pay PSU another $20 In conclusion, I am strongly against this policy. I believe Penn State has no right to charge the additional fee. That is why I am urging fellow Penn State fans to take a stand with me and call for a change.
