Dear Councilman Yassky, We as parents of PS/MS 282 students have become increasingly concerned about the condition of the small playground outside the Pre-K classrooms. *The surface is disintegrating, creating a dangerously uneven play area. Not a day goes by that a child doesn't trip on this surface, resulting in scraped knees. It is only a matter of time before we have a more serious injury. *There is an exposed piece of jagged metal on the slide inadequately covered with tape. *The paint is peeling off the playground equipment. We are concerned about children ingesting paint chips. Beyond that hazard, the peeling paint gives the playground a shabby appearance that reflects poorly on the school within the community. Our PTA recently held a fundraiser to begin the resurfacing process ourselves because the well-being and safety of our children are our highest priority. We elected our officials because we believed they share our concern for out children's education and safety. In addition to the egregious safety issues, we are frustrated with what this playground says about our school. The Pre-K playground is one of the most prominent public faces of PS/MS 282. It is where many of the Pre-K students and parents spend their afternoons and it is frequently visited by families of younger children in the community, parents of prospective 282 students. As hard as the administration, faculty, and parents are working to make this an excellent school we feel the failure of the Office of School Construction to make these repairs undermines our efforts. We would appreciate it if you could help expedite these repairs. Sincerely, PS/MS 282 Parents PS/MS 282 PTA Executive Board Park Slope community members
