Name: Janet Sniffen on Sep 2, 2003State: VTCountry: USComments: I have been totally taken by Providian they pulled the old bait and switch on me. I was a single widowed mother of a young child and I was trying to rebuild my credit. well provdian approved me for a CC with an 18% intrest rate which at first was 19% but I had such a good payment history they lowerd my rate. 2 years later they changed my account to My Card Account with a 29.9% intrest rate. I don't understand I paid my payments on time they extended me more credit during the previous 2 years now I am doing everything I can to keep up and get ahead but with all of the finance charges it has put me over the limit so now I have to pay the over the limit fees. now my card is so far over the limit I feel I will never be able to pay this card off and when I make the minimum I feel I am throwing money away. I hope someday there is justic for people like me. thanks for lisening ps also I wish the harassing phone calls would stop the people they hire to call you are the rudist people I have ever had to deal with, they make the IRS look great.Flag

My rate went from 18.9 to 9.9 along with weekly letters encouraging me to take advantage of the "FRIENDLY" rates. Now,although I've never been late with a payment,my rate is now 29.9 percent!!! I feel that providian took advantage of me.I was once robbed at gun point, and believe me,this feels much worse and is costing much more!!Flag

Name: Dan Tstill on Sep 12, 2003State: ILCountry: USComments: I too was truely screwed by Providian, and the bad part is, I had no fuc**** idea until just yesterday. I called to request a line increase and lower my interest rate back to what I previously had under my visa account b-4 it was transferred to a mastercard with card service center at a horrific rate of 29.99%, which I thought should be no problem because I'd just lowered my debt from 2300 to 200 in less than 3 months, in addition to always making timely payments on my acct since I opened it 3 years ago. The rep I spoke with advised me they were not offering lower interest rates or line increases at this time to any of their customers, which I thought to my self what kind of damn rinky dink company is this. I've never in my life heard any bull**** like this b-4. I then became very suspicious and decided to research this issue a little bit more going back to last year when my card was first converted from a visa to a mastercard and then I stumbled upon this page, now I see I have too been a victim of the most horrific credit company in this world. I should have known something was wrong when my visa was transferred to card service center as a mastercard. I will be closing this acct as soon as providian, card service center or who ever the hell they are opens their lines for business tomorrow!!!!!Flag

Name: Louvina Allen on Sep 24, 2003State: TXCountry: USComments: I received the letter from Providian with the opt-out. I still have the letter on file. Providian offer me a 29.99 % interest rate and increase fo 6.00% after over 2 years of paying my bill on time. I always thought if you paid in a timely manner you would get a lower interest rate. They gave me the choice of closing my account, so that's what I opt-ed to. But they were going continue to charge me interest of 23.99%. Plus all of the other fees. I took a payment plan after writing several letters in protest. To pay 160.00 monthly. After a couple of payments I was told that my account had been sold and the interest rate was even higher than the 23.99% with fees too. So the whold thing started up again and I refused to pay the monthly growing amount. After several letters back and forth and a growing balance adding fees, fees, and more fees. I thought to the devil with it.Flag

Name: Sharon Black on Oct 20, 2003State: KYCountry: USComments: I requested my account with Providian be closed over a year ago because of their sneaky business practices. Today, Oct 20, 03 I called and asked why my account is being charges over credit fees if the account has been closed for over a year. They informed me they never closed the account and a payment was late (which I have never received discovered what happened to my check) and they have proceeded to charge me $35.00 late fees and $35.00 over the limit fees because they put my account back over the limit!!! How can they keep charging fees that they are creating on an account. Especially since I requested the account be closed over a year ago.Flag

Name: Claire Faull on Nov 4, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: Thankyou for your bravery,I say bravery because these big corporations are scary. Sears is one such company which has been sued for corrupt business practises (see-complaints against sears) but my worst of all time experience was with Capitol One, who now have various names to camoflage the same devious practises they've adhered to. They got so bad over $2.17 that was a balance on a closed account.(I actually had been so horrified with this company that I had called and asked for my balance so that I could get rid of them. They conveniently didn't check my balance so that they could assess $75 p/m on my piddling $2.17. I eventually had to call the govenor of the state they were operating out of. That got results. My advice to other consumers- Go to the top. CEO,Govenor, George Bush.Flag

Name: Sandra Bautista on Nov 10, 2003State: KYCountry: USComments: After 14 Months of on time, above minimum payments, to Providian, I find that my APR was increased by more than 5%. Their vague, senseless, explanation blew me away. They are raising the rates because my payment history (my credit report shows 14 months of payments, all current) indicates an increased credit risk. I will go without food and whatever else I can to pay this company off. I've cut up the card. People please stay away from Providian. It is the most unscrupulous company I have ever done business with. Public Beware!!!Flag
