Comments: I too have been exploited by Providian. I closed three of their credit cards when they decided to go up to 29.99% interest. They held the one card, but sold the other two to another card company who will not honor the lower interest rate I was paying. They are still continuing to charge me 29.99% for past debt which I think is outrageous and why I closed the account. Card Service Center will not honor the agreement with Providian.

Comments: While i agree that many banks use deceptive practices, the real solution is a cap in the interest rates that banks are permitted to charge. A simple max rate say 10% above prime is certainly adequate to maintain a profit and deal with the poor credit risks. The liability for poor credit card holders is the risk of that the financial instutions need to control, by issuing cards wisely.

Comments: I have an account that used to be with Aria. Aria has since been absorbed by a company caled My Card Account. The interest rate on this card each month is as much as the minimum payment- so I have to pay double just to see the balance decrease. Unfortunately I am not in a position to pay huge chunks of the debt at once, so it's a struggle to decrease the debt.

Comments: This is exactly what happened to me after paying my account on time with more than the minimum amount due for over 2 years. I know my credit will be destroyed, but Providian will not get another nickel from me.

Comments: I was so frustrated with Providian that I decided to pay my account in full. I called Providian and made the payment by check over the phone. I was told by the CSR I would receive a statement showing my account paid in full. However, the following month I received another statement showing my account past due for the full amount and a late fee. I assumed it was an error and disregarded the statement. (Big Mistake) Providian continued to bill me two months after my check had cleared. I called the CSR at Providian and was told that the computer showed my payment however, the payment had not been posted to my account. The CSR further stated I would continue to receive bills showing my account past due until the payment was posted to my account. Three months have past and I am still receiving bills from Providian. I give up.

Comments: Providian has negotiated a payment plan for two of my accounts(each defaulted for one month) in which I paid double the normal monthly payment, and then chared me $35 late feemonthly and $35 over limit fee monthly and now I can't get the price down enough to keep me in the clear and while on the payment plan they turned into the credit agencies the delinquentcies. you can't win with these people..

Comments: I understand raising rates, BUT I had already cancelled my card and was paying it off at an interest rate of 19.9% and they raised the rate to 29.9%. Greed is the only word they understand. I would be more than willing to pay off my debt at the 19.9%. I will not pay off the 29.9% Greed monsters.

Comments: Recently I was exploited by two credit card companies, AT&T Universal Card and CitiBank Card. They both raised my interest rates from 9.9% to 24.9% and 29.9%. Both of these accounts were current and there had never been any problems. I tried talking to them about it to get the rates lowered back down. AT&T Universal lowered it down to 10% for about 3 months then shot it back up. I ended up having to get an agency to help me deal with this. The rates are now back down to 9.9% (fixed) and I will be more successful in getting them paid off. It should be illegal for credit card companies to do this!! It's totally outrageous to have cards that are being paid on, not being used, and the balance is higher the next month than it was the month before just because of the interest! Is the government aware of how big this problem is Something has got to be done!! Karen Chalfant
