As a senior Deaf Education major, I know I am one of a “dying breed.” As graduation is upon us, I could not be more excited to see myself and my Special Education and Clinical Services peers graduate. You can understand my broken heartedness when it was shared with me that I would not be partaking in a department graduation ceremony because there is not going to be one. To me, a department graduation can create the most memories on graduation day. This is where I can celebrate with my peers of the past four years for completing all of the essays, giving all of the presentations, and completing all of our field placements. Without this ceremony, we will be robbed of that experience. My peers and I will not be the only ones who will miss this experience. Family and friends traveling from the other side of the state and country for hours will miss this opportunity to support their loved ones. The professors and staff members that have stood by our side for the past four years, supporting us, telling us that we can be successful when we put our mind to it and taught us everything we know will not be able to show their support like they would if there was a department graduation ceremony. This ceremony will give us memories that we will remember forever, memories we will tell our future grandchildren about. These memories will not be made with thousands of other students in the Kovalchick Conference and Athletic Complex.
