| 302 | Arvind | In the early 80s, I myself experienced the conversion from a protestant group in Bombay and almost converted, but for a miracle. The first thing I read in the Bible was and took to heart was "Judge not ant thou shalt not be judged". The group I was involved with did just the opposite by proclaiming to be 'children of God' and proclaiming all others Hindus, Muslims and even local Catholics (the Kohlis), anyone other than their kind of Christians to be Satan followers. I was surprised to see religious Muslims converting and thought it to be impressive. But then slowly I began to question them about what was written in the Holy Bible and what they were doing. They would get angry and threaten me with consequences of burning in hell if I did not submit. The day of baptism turned out to be the day Jesus saved me. A group of us were to be baptised at a Mumbai beach. We went into the sea. In a few moments people started screaming. Jellyfish with poisonous tentacles were afloat near the shore. All but, myself were badly stung and hurt. Children, women and adults were all screaming at the painful experience they were going through. I even felt jellyfish tentacles running along my body gently with no harm. That is when a question arose. Am I being protected by Jesus or Satan? I guess Jesus protected me. I still love Jesus. I don’t judge any religion but find it repulsive the way these missionaries are going with the conversions. They locate 'vulnerable' people like drug-addicts, poor people who are basically needy, even people with low self esteem and also those with families gone wrong. They coerce, cajole and finally threaten. Today I find the TV channels like God TV, Miracle Net, etc. doing the same things. It is appalling how the Information & Broadcasting Ministry in India is ignorant of these issues. Allowing Joyce Meyer to conduct 'healings’ in Mumbai was not good. Nothing against her, but our Maharashtrian youth is turning to Christianity. Our Dalit friends are turning to Christianity, as there is no political will in the short-sighted politicians. I have lots of respect for Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru, and is this what they would have like to happen in India? Is the Sonia Gandhi camp supporting these conversions, if yes why? It is for all of us to think. I wish the Hindu organisations would look at these conversions more closely. I am a Hindu because it is the only religion I feel that allows me the freedom to be me. It allows me to grow and evolve at the pace that I can and should as a 'HUMAN BEING'. Hinduism doesn’t force me to go to a temple daily. It doesn’t force me to pay up. It doesn’t force me to confess. I can be myself and strive to be a good human being. |

Especially the conversions which are happening deceptive ways. For missionaries any means if justified because of end. Missionary activities in India a bringing division in the families, violence in the society. This has to be stopped. Mass illegal conversions are going on everywhere in India. It is coming to the mainstream not just in villages. They are buying off media, politicians, celebrities. This has to be stopped. As Pope said they are successful in AUstralia, Soth America, North America, Africa, Hawaii. Now his target is Asia, especially India. Since Hindus are tolerant towards other religions. Respect other religions, accommadate other religions. This has to be stopped. |
