I'm starting this petition because my 13 year old child was picked out of a group of four girls entering her school. Monday March 17, 2014 my daughter wore an outfitthat consist of shape patterned black pants, a white shirt and a blue jacket. According to the Decatur City Student Code of Conduct handbook she was in compliance with the dress code rules. As she entered the school a teacher addressed her as having on revealing clothes and instructed her to go to the office. Once in the office she notified me that I had to bring her a change of clothes, check her out, or she would be subjected to sit in ISS the entire day. I went to the school and found out that because her pants did not have any pockets they were considered leggings. I spoke with the lady that handles the dress code and she could not find where the dress code rule states no leggings can not be wore she directed me to the principle. The principle to did not have documentation to back up why my child's outfit was deemed inappropriate. As we continued to discuss the issue I noticed another student with a similar outfit on and ask the principle about her pants that did not have pockets and her shirt that was not four inches above the knee (the 4 inch rules is not in the conduct book either). He says he will look into the matter because he thinks the young lady is in P.E and I say well ask her she's right there and again he states I assure you I will get to the bottom of it. He goes on to say the reason some girls get "over looked'' is because they don't have butts as big and he corrected himself by saying all girls have different figures and therefore they can get away with an outfit whereas others can't. So after we agreed to disagree he gave my child the option of going home with an excused absence, or she could stay at school, but don't wear anymore pants with out pockets. He said if she wanted to wear yoga pants (which also does not have pockets) that would be more suitable attire. As I sat and waited on my child to get her things I observed at least 8 girls if not more pass through the halls with leggings on, but no one pulled them aside, or even looked their way. So I urge any parent that has had, or is dealing with this issue sign your name on this petiton because this is the one thing that goes against the mission of the Board of Education and that is nothing should interfere or be disruptive to health, safety and educational processwhile at school. Thanks.
