Professor Rayfield A. Waller of Wayne State University in Detroit, has created this petition in response to the murder of Dr. Tillman of Wichita, Kansas. It is the belief of those who sign this petition that an entertainment channel, such as Fox 'News', should not be allowed to circumvent the laws against libel, slander, and incitement to violence and murder, by calling itself a 'news' channel and hiding behind our Constitution's sacred first amendment protection meant for genuine news outlets, which Fox 'News' is not. Fox 'News' and Bill O'Reilly are implicated in the murder of Physician, George Tiller, who was gunned down by an anti-abortion zealot in the wake of slanderous attacks on Tiller by Fox. Dr. Tiller was repeatedly referred to on Fox broadcasts as "Tiller the Baby Killer," while lies and distortions were reported by Fox about his therapeutic abortion service in Wichita Kansas. On May 31, 2009, Dr. Tiller was murdered in Wichita, in the front lobby of his Lutheran church, by a man who many believe was influenced to hate and to kill by the constant slanders hurled at Tiller by Fox. Even if Fox is not directly responsible for inciting a murder, the general tone of Fox's constant attacks on American progressives, from Whoopie Goldberg to George Clooney to Jenine Garafalo, to President Obama himself, makes the network a travesty and an embarrassment; it is a propaganda network for the hard right, masquerading as a 'news' network. Sign this petition to eliminate Fox, to shut down O'Reilly, and to defend the lives of physicians who provide medical services to women. This petition will be presented by Professor Waller to the chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, which is only one of the committees that have the power and jurisdiction to support laws (such as the now defunct fairness doctrine) that will regulate what a self described 'news channel' can and cannot do and say regarding the issue of slander and libel.
