Sarah TurnerI have set up this petition as I think it is time the UK government seriously thought about where they see prostitution in the 21st century. The current laws are a confusing hotpotch of stigmatism for women and protection for clients. I am also very concerned about the increasing numbers of women trafficked into prostitution in this country and feel that the UK government is doing very little to combat this sexual slavery. If you agree that something needs to be done - even if you would rather prostitution was legalised, please sign this petition and start the serious debate. Many thanks
Philippa ReedI feel the debate must be prioritised now, since the human trafficking situation in particular is a pressing issue today. I would urge the goverment to follow the laws enforced in Sweden, as this would be a positive step forward in the protection of women, and provoke society in to viewing the wider implications of prostitution in a more evolved way.
Helen AtkinsThe most effective current model for minimising harm to those most at risk through prostitution is the Swedish model, whereby persons purchasing sex acts are criminalised and those providing commercial sex acts are decriminalised. This approach helps to protect the human rights of the vulnerable and places responsibility for harm caused by prostitution on the source of demand: the punters.

Khilan ShahI fall directly into the category of men that recent reports suggest are most likely to visit prostitutes - i.e. around thirty years of age, married, in full time employment with no criminal convictions. I am shocked at some of the statistics that are being suggested about my peer group - the staggering increase in those visiting prostitutes over the last few years is very worrying. Is this the way we want society to develop? A debate on the issue is long overdue before the situation spirals further out of control.

Caroline KellyThink that this is an extremely serious issue for women, and the law needs to protect women much more than it currently does.

REBECCA TURNERI`m particularly concerned about what is happening in Germany, women losing their benefits if they don`t take prostitution work that is offered to them, and those jobs being treated as if they were any other. That is ACTIVELY forcing women to go into prostitution and i find that morally reprehensible. I used to be in favour of perhaps legalising prostitution but upon reading about that i`m now firmly against.

Jo HoneyProstitution is abuse. The buying and selling of women's bodies has no place in civilised society and must be criminalised.
JENNIFER DREWProstitution is NOT THE OLDEST PROFESSION, rather agriculture is. Such claims feed into myths wherein certain women must always be available for male sexual gratification. We must challenge the widespread belief that men as a group need a sexual release and as such certain women must always be made available. Prostitution is an abuse of women's rights and should be treated as such. We must challenge the widespread myth that male sexuality is uncontrollable unless certain women are made sexually available to men. Prostitution is another form of sexual slavery irrespective of whether a woman 'chose' to work as a prostituted woman or not. Prostitution is not an inevitable fact of life - it is about power and how this is distributed. Most women and girls do not 'freely choose' to work as prostitutes. Societal attitudes concerning women and female sexualities must challenged. We need to ask why men are socialised into believing it is acceptable for certain women to be 'prostituted?'
Dr Emma ByrneProstitution permits and encourages the abuse of women and children. The purchasers of sexual services should be brought to account as accessories to this abuse.

AnonymousThe ending of sexual slavery should be a first priority
Teresa UlloaProstitution is the oldest violence perpetrated against the bodies of women and girls, is against human dignity and perpetuates stereotypes prejudicial for women and girls who are reduce to commodities that can be sel, rented, or buy, promotes trafficking in persons with sexual purposes and sexual commercial exploitation of children. UK should adapt a law like the Sweedish law that criminalizes the demand and helps and protect women from pimps and traffickers.

Sandra McNeillProstitution is violence against women. Follow the Swedish Example and criminalise the pimps and punters. This will reduce trafficking and prostitution.
AnonymousProstitution is the worst form of oppression there is. There seems to be the idea that so long as it's paid for it's ok to abuse and rape. Well it's still abuse and rape and for most of the women involved it's a continuation of childhood trauma of one kind or another. It's time it was stopped and the women involved given the help they need to move on with their lives and realise some self esteem. Prosecution and imprisonment of their abuser 'clients' and their 'pimp' owners should be the law and should be enforced. I would be grateful for all you can do to bring this about. Thank you.
Irene CastilloWe would like to see new laws introduced on the lines of those brought into Sweden in 1999.

Shirley LawrieProstitution is the abuse of women and those demanding it should be brought before the law. Women who are prostitutes should be given help to find another way to earn their living, and help with any addiction problems.

dr sasha rakoffProposed government proposals to reform prostitution - to deny its inevitability and to tackle demand - are an impressive step. They need to become legislation - alongside massive public and media awareness campaigns as to the stark realities of this, the 'oldest oppression'

AnonymousIt used to be thought that slavery was 'natural' and would always be around. That notion was rightly challenged, and slavery was abolished in this country. Why should 'the oldest abuse of women' be any different?

Louisa RussellThe Swedish Model has provided clear international leadership on this issue - it is smart to consider it seriously at this time.
