Herd immunity has been severely weakened by rising vaccine exemption rates across the United States. According to research from a 2006 Journal of the American Medical Association, from 1991 to 2004, the average rate of vaccine exemption increased by 50% across the United States. Vaccine-exempted children tend to live in the same communities; these clusters of unvaccinated children harbor infectious diseases, and because a majority of these populations is prone to infection, disease spreads easily and rapidly. Recently, there have been outbreaks of measles, mumps, Hib, and pertussis across the U.S. Unvaccinated children have become seriously ill or have died from these diseases. To prevent the spread of disease and to protect our children, we must not continue to permissively issue vaccine exemptions. Parents seeking vaccine exemptions should be forced to take a vaccine education course provided by their pediatrician or health professional. They must fully understand the consequences of refusing vaccination before being granted an exemption form. Parents must be aware that vaccinations do not only protect their child's health - but also the health of their community, including immunocompromised children and babies too young to be vaccinated. Whether or not to vaccinate is not only a personal choice but a public health issue. By requiring an education class for exemption-seeking parents, we hope to persuade parents to vaccinate without infringing on their individual right to choose.
