With city traffic and congestion becoming a real and increasingly serious problem with not only local traffic, but import traffic from other jurisdictions, adding commercial trucks which exceed 10,000 kgs to our fast lanes, as well as middle lanes on three lane highways, is also increasing the risk of danger with smaller vehicles sharing the road. More often than not, when travelling anywhere in the lower mainland, you will find commercial trucks competing for space or position. This not only disrupts the normal flow of traffic for other smaller passenger vehicles, it creates dangerous blind spots for other drivers trying to get around these commercial vehicles. Commercial lanes are clearly marked along Highway #1 when approaching the Port Mann Bridge, as well as the George Massey Tunnel just for example. However with the approach to the tunnel only being a 2 lane highway (not including car pool lane), commercial trucks are constantly taking over the fast lanes and blocking smaller vehicle traffic. The end result is that trucks need to merge back into the slow lane just to enter the tunnel. These same circumstances also affect the Port Mann Bridge East Bound approach. Although the approach to the new Port Mann Bridge are still uncertain in how trucks will designated, forcing policing departments to ticket commercial trucks for not adhering to the right lane only law will be needed, because we know that commercial drivers will always try to find another lane to use without consequence or penalty. This policy is already in place and enforced in many jurisdictions throughout the United States, and in some parts of Canada. Its proven it saves lives, reduces risk and enhances proper traffic flow, which in turn can also reduce diesel emissions and green house gas. There is no doubting that trucks which weigh in excess of 100,000 pounds sharing the same space with a passenger vehicle that weighs 3,000 pds is not as safe as it could be.
