On January 29th, 2013, Charles Albert Poland, Jr. selflessly sacrificed his own life to protect the lives of the 22 school children aboard his bus. A gunman boarded the school bus he was driving in an attempt to take hostages. Mr. Poland blocked his access to the children, giving 21 of them time to escape to safety, while one was taken hostage. Mr. Poland was shot and killed as a result of his heroic effort.
