Comments: A lot of marginalized groups are stigmatized as being more violent than those who don't belong to them, and ableism directed against people with mental illness is no more valid than any other bias in this context.Flag -

Mental illness is transient just like any other illness and it cannot be an identity of a person, so please refrain from categorizing as 'mentally ill'. President Obama, let me remind you that, people who commit acts of violence are not persons with mental illness. Research has informed us that violent behaviour co habits when there is a history of substance abuse or alcoholism in a person. Please stop stereotyping. RegardsFlag

Comments: I'm deeply disappointed that in two debates, President Obama has managed to insult non-neurotypical Americans twice. Legal discrimination based on any characteristic of birth (including disability and neurology) should not be condoned in a free society.Flag -

Name: Frank Blankenship on Oct 17, 2012Comments: Obama was being very prejudicial and excessive when he spoke 3 times (3 strikes) about "keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill". Since when do we trash the second amendment to the US constitution in such a arbitrary fashion? Next question, when is the president going to do something about over zealous cops who shoot unarmed civilians for being perceived as a threat!? Neither illnesses nor guns kill people, people kill people.Flag

Comments: I was disappointed to hear President Obama making these statements. It feels like discrimination to me, and like using mis-informed public prejudice against a vulnerable group to make political points. I hope President Obama will correct the record with accurate information and take leadership to discourage this kind of discrimination and prejudice from occurring.Flag -

Name: Jim Sabatke on Oct 17, 2012Comments: Comparing keeping guns "out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill" reminds me a lot of some very disturbing WWI German rhetoric. I'm certainly not calling anyone a Nazi and I intend to vote for Obama, but that was terribly insensitive. Many studies consistently show that the mentally ill are less violent than the rest of the population.Flag

Name: Jonathan Dosick on Oct 18, 2012Comments: Please, Mr. President, PLEASE don't continue to spread stereotypes of "violence and mental illness." Those diagnosed with such conditions (myself included) need the most support from our leaders. Economic, social, and political disenfranchisement are constant barriers for them. I believe in your capability to unite Americans. Please don't exclude us!Flag
