Dear President Obama, In your debate on Oct 16 with Mitt Romney, you said that you favored "keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill." This is discrimination and stereotyping. People labeled "mentally ill" are no more likely than anyone else to commit acts of violence. Some of us are responsible gun owners. We are in fact more likely than others to be victimized by violence. People labeled "mentally ill" vote. We are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act and by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which you have signed and sent to the Senate for ratification. Please stop scapegoating us, offer an apology and adopt policies on gun control that apply equally to everyone without discrimination based on based on disability, such as a ban on assault weapons.

Andrew W. Kane, Ph.D., United States2 years ago Comments: Research consistently shows that people with serious mental illnesses are LESS violent than is the average person walking down the street. The media blow it way out of proportion when a rare event, serious violence by someone with a mental illness, occurs. By calling for eliminating gun use by people with mental illnesses, you are further stigmatizing people who are, in general, both law-abiding and vulnerable, not dangerous.
