Dear President Obama:

In the 1960s, Gene Roddenberry was well ahead of his time. When he created Star Trek it was a controversy because White men, men of colour, women, and women of colour were working together as equals aboard a ship. Gene Roddenberry created his characters and his beloved show, Star Trek, not caring about one's: gender, race, religion, sexuality, or human (or vulcan) form. Even today, in 2015, there are still people who are not as intellectually advanced as Roddenberry when it comes to equality and justice.
Tens of millions of Trekkies (Star Trek fans) live in the United States, and millions more live close to the border in Canada.
We ask that a Star Trek Day, also called Gene Roddenberry Day, become a national holiday on October 24th, the day he passed away. Star Trek/Gene Roddenberry Day would be a day to promote equality and understanding in workplaces and schools to help educate people, reduce school and workplace bullying, and end the wage gap for women, which is even higher for women of colour. On Star Trek Day students, school staff, and employees, such as nurses and doctors in children's hospitals, would be permitted to wear a Star Trek costume or memorabilia. We also ask for basic TV channels to have a Star Trek marathon on October 24th. In schools, we would like to see Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek used in the curriculum to discuss how all different types of people can work together, and let it be a half day from school.
We feel a man as kind, intellectual, creative, and honourable as the late Gene Roddenberry deserves to have his own national holiday for giving the world not only one of the best series ever made, but also making the United States more progressive.

Sincerely,

Megan DePerro (creator of petition) and petitioners
