Comments: Mary Robinson is a former President of Ireland, has been a Professor of Law at Trinity College Dublin, and is a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The hallmarks of her career so far include integrity and her courageous defence of human rigthts and democracy. She is the ideal candidate because she would help to bridge the democracy gap that has developed within the European Union. She would give civil society, and the individual citizens of the European Union, a real voice within Europe. More importantly, her international humanitarian experiences would also help to bridge the huge chasm that exists between the elite states of the world and the citizens of the majority world who have been exploited, especially by European colonial states for several centuries.
