The California legislature will soon be voting on AB 5 which protects the right to sleep, panhandle, leave personal property and otherwise take up residence in public places (parks and streets) without being subject to criminal or civil sanctions. Homelessness, although not a crime, is an unhealthy lifestyle that erodes our public spaces, creates unsafe conditions in our parks, creates environmental problems (trash, defecation, dirty needles), increases crime and puts a tremendous drain on public resources. Instead of enshrining homelessness, encourage our legislators to put money into programs that move people out of homelessness, not make it noble to live a lifestyle that damages the surrounding community.
