Comments: The NIH is our country’s preeminent medical research enterprise and represents our greatest hope for finding cures and treatments for chronic and debilitating diseases that afflict millions of Americans. Any significant cut to the NIH budget will slow research progress and squander invaluable scientific opportunities, to the detriment of our nation’s health.

Comments: The work for which I received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 was completely funded by an NIH grant. The continued funding is needed to unlock the biological mysteries underlying human disease and well being. Support for basic research is critical for this endeavor.

Comments: Cyclic NIH budgets with repeating low-periods that cause loss of labs and jobs at universities is a death blow to recruiting, training, and development of young U.S. biomedical scientists. The recovery in training lags so severely behind any recoveries in funding that the decline becomes continuous.

Comments: In addition to the clearly important work of the NIH and its funded investigators described above, I also want to emphasize the critical role all NIH investigators play in training the next generations of scientists and doctors, in educating the public about biology and science pertaining to their health and treatments of their diseases, and in being a real engine for innovation of all types.

Comments: I am a recent PhD graduate and would like to pursue an academic research career. As the NIH funds the majority of academic research in this country, cutting their budget will have an immediate and definite impact on finding a job, for not just myself, but for all young investigators for years to come. Please do not cut our funding!
