Recently a new policy and schedule was put in place regarding ‘Class Pride Day’ or among the students and community it is known as ‘Color Wars’. As you may know ‘Color Wars’ has been apart of the AGHS Community for about 10-15 years. Yes, it can be said that the day has gotten out of hand and caused malicious vandalism around the school that requires a substantial amount of resources and extra staffing to enforce strict rules. Color Wars day has always been about ‘leaving your mark’ and showing the spirit of your class. Leaving school with the colors of upperclassmen marked on your t-shirt was always the highlight of the day. It has become apparent among years that color wars or class pride day is slowly being removed. I had spoke with students and parents regarding alternate ways to celebrate class pride, while maintaining the true tradition that has been carried throughout. Some students had said that ‘Color Wars is the only day throughout the year that I really enjoy the most’, and ‘What I really love about Color Wars is that it’s a day where I can truly express myself and my spirit for the school and class I am in’. Some parents even chimed in saying ‘I couldn’t wait to get home to see the aftermath of my child’s outfit that she had a lot of fun preparing’. Another saying ‘every year I post a before & after photo on Facebook, and this year I couldn’t really do that.’ And of course ‘my child came home and complained about how lame the spirit day was and I actually felt bad for him’. Color Wars has grown into the community so much that other schools have started to start a similar spirit day. Instead of removing the tradition that has been celebrated for 10-15 years, carry on the tradition in a safe and fun environment
