MPI leadership has officially confirmed the reinstatement of the original program requirements and the protection of the CMM designation. I have received formal documentation verifying these changes will be implemented across all association platforms effectively immediately. We will continue monitoring the transition to ensure full compliance with these agreed terms.

Prompted by Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and its new LLC partner, the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) proposed changes to the Certificate in Meeting Management (CMM) program, an online survey of the worldwide total of 938 CMMs was held 18 – 22 February 2014. Nearly 20% of existing CMMs completed the survey. Eighty eight percent (88%) of the respondents are “not in favor of the changes outlined by MPI.” Based on this response, the data collected, and the majority opinions expressed, we, the undersigned meeting professionals, respectfully request that MPI make the following modifications to the revised program:
1. Retain the 10-year experiential requirement for eligibility and acceptance2. Rescind the honorary CMM credentials awarded to SMMC designees in January 2014. SMMC designees may earn the CMM designation by meeting the 10-year requirement and submitting a business plan or completing the new program at a reduced rate.
3. Restore the Certificate in Meeting Management acronym and explanation regarding the program’s original stature and requirements on www.mpiweb.org
4. If the above changes cannot be incorporated, it is requested that the new MPI/GBTA program use a name other than “CMM”

We all worked SO hard and devoted nearly a week away from our jobs for a chance to earn this designation, not to mention the significant expense. Why, when it is becoming recognized and respected by more and employers would you negate/de value it's significance!
I have over 25 years experience, have taught meeting planning at the university level and I proudly list earning my CMM in my bio. It seems like this decision alienates many and could be easily avoided.
Diluting a program that has loyal followers who qualified for the certifcate is a lose, lose. Create a NEW program for the travel folks. They deserve their own designation and CMMers deserve what they earned.
Too many certificate and certification programs in the events industry have been 'watered down' and lack the credibility as well as clear understanding of core competencies and showing level of proficiency to even garner the certificate or certification.
I am most disappointed by the changes being made to the program. As one of the newest graduates of the program - the ink was barely dry on my hard earned certification only to find it wasn't as valuable any longer.
Redesigning the entire CMM program has left a very sour taste in the mouths of members. The decision by MPI to essentially dilute the significance of the Certification in Meeting Management (CMM) will result in the reduction of qualified individuals receiving the designation, thus the reduction of weight it and ANY OTHER CERTIFICATION related to the Industry may hold. Designations are designed to be given to a specific group of people who fulfill specific criteria, have specific experience and backgrounds, a desire to elevate their knowledge and standing and can successfully complete a specialized assessment related to the aforementioned. Many CMPs/CMMs are not involved in decisions related to business travel arena. The GBTA in and of itself is a highly esteemed and recognized organization, welcoming individuals who are involved in the area of business travel. The Association should have been encouraged to offer its own certification without involvement from MPI, which has created its own niche in the Meetings Industry. If nothing else, MPI should have informed its members of the notion of modifying the CMM designation PRIOR to actually executing the change. I shall continue my affiliation with Meeting Professionals International as it offers myriad resources for and a great network of like-minded, like-experienced individuals. If I wish to become involved in business travel, I shall look to the GBTA for the same.

Quite honestly my renewal of my MPI membership is based on how this plays out. I am currently researching other industry organizations with which to affiliate myself that are more in tune with what the industry wants and needs.
