Due to budget cuts, the State of NH is no longer providing oversight at Farmers' Markets. This includes no longer requiring Homestead Licensing for those who bake and cook from home to sell at markets. Food handling rules and guidelines have not changed, but are no longer "enforced" by the State. As a Customer as well as a Vendor - this is of great concern to me. If Vendors don't choose to follow established guidelines and procedures to ensure properly handled quality foods that are safe for consumption and someone gets sick - our whole market is brought down in quality level and sent into a higher risk factor for insurance leading to greater cost for every vendor and less customers at the market. Sometimes we have to police ourselves. I feel the Newport NH Farmers' Market prepared food vendors should be REQUIRED to follow safe and proper food handling rules and guidelines such as covering or wrapping products, using gloves or papers or tongs for serving, and posting clearly marked prices.
