Name: Julie Reynolds on Oct 24, 2012Address: 13 Bigelow RoadComments: I totally support this. Our children in Kindergarten spend more time on computers than those in MHHS. My 4th grader currently receives no school instruction on even basic word processing or safe internet navigation - I have to teach this at home.Flag

Name: Dawn Conboy on Oct 24, 2012Address: 27 Dick Finn Road, New Fairfield, CT 06812Comments: I also think there should be a "parent preparation" class so that we can become familar with how they will be using the pc and sites so that we can help our children when they have issues at home doing homework. I found this to be struggle this year.Flag

I will not stand by and watch my children fall behind because they can't keep up due to insufficient training in advance.Flag

Name: Phyllis Nevins on Oct 24, 2012Address: 13 Fieldstone DriveComments: The 1-1 computing transition was extreme --too much too soon!!!! Particularly with the Common Core changes as well. These changes have left my daughter feeling overwhelmed since the second week of school. She spends over 3 hours a night on homework, much of this due to the technology that is also expected to be used at home. Were the children prepared for this? NO. Were the parents prepared for this NO. Was the school prepared for this ? NO. Slow it down ...these kids don't need to be robots by the time they are seniors! College kids still purchase textbooks and do math hw on PAPER! Teach them how to feel comfortable with the technology before you move so drastically in this direction and set such high expectations for them!Flag

Name: Patricia Gasparino on Oct 24, 2012Address: 14 Chestnut Hill DriveComments: Transition was horrendous - my kids spend more time waiting for Google Drive to update their homework then doing actual work. The frustration level is through the roof. The quality and level of work between my oldest who is now in high school and my twins that are now in Middle School isn't even comparable. Really it feels like these kids are being used in a giant experiment. Brought this issue up at the BOE meeting previously and was told it was completely unnecessary - sit in my house a few hours a night. The other night when Edmodo was down I thought they were all going to have heart attacks.Flag

Name: Monika Thiel on Oct 24, 2012Address: Gillotti Road, New Fairfield, CTComments: 1) The teachers should receive training on how to use the computer most effectively for instruction. 2) The students should receive instruction on how to type and navigate. They should also learn about the basics on how to use the computer safely. 3) Because this is public education system, if the district mandates it, then it should pay for the computers, operating system, software, connection fees, security software, etc. (This is an unfunded mandate essentially.) They should also pay for a school wide IT security audit to assure anyone who links into that network is not vulnerable to threats of online theft and fraud. 4) They should change policies to make sure that there are greater penalties in the event that students' electronic devices are stolen at school. This includes filing a police report and conducting an investigation. Although the computer can be a very useful and cost-effective instructional tool, it depends how it is used. Also, there are alot of other factors to consider.Flag

It is a shame a petition is needed at all. The funding and incentives offered to and received by the school district for adopting this program should have covered this basic training to begin with.Flag

Name: Debbie Costanzo on Oct 25, 2012Address: 11 East Lake RoadComments: I do agree but also everything should not be done on computers. We all know they break down and what is a child to do when this happens. I just had this situation with my high schooler. The modo system was down and no one could get the notes the teacher puts on there. So guess what they were out of luck and couldn't complete homework.Flag
