Excelsior’s power lines cover different kinds of areas and procedures for side trimming, cleaning up cut limbs and herbicide spraying should be based on the type of area that is involved. What is satisfactory for power lines in woods, rural fields and along roadsides is different from lines that run across sodded, mowed areas that are essentially a part of a member’s yard. It is recommended that sodded areas which are mowed by home owners be side trimmed from the ground up and debris removed. Using herbicides in these areas not only kills the low brush that encroaches from the sides, it destroys the sod. The homeowner is already doing most of the work to keep the power line clear at ground level. Adopting these procedures will mean less work for the sprayers and very marginal additional work for the side trimmers. It will enable the land owner to minimize unsightly areas around power lines and allow crews full access to safely maintain the power lines.
