We, the undersigned citizens of the State of Georgia, believe it is both morally wrong and economically and socially damaging for more than 1 million of our fellow citizens to live in poverty. In some counties as many as one in four children and one in five seniors are poor. Such persistent poverty constrains our State’s development and frays the social fabric of our communities. What is more, we believe the resources and know-how exist to effectively fight hunger and poverty in our State. What is lacking is the political will.
By signing this petition we are calling on all gubernatorial candidates to 1) pledge their commitment to making fighting poverty in Georgia a top priority, and 2) should they be elected to office, produce plans outlining specific goals, actions, and timetables for doing so.
How candidates respond to this call will play an important part in determining how we, the undersigned, vote in the gubernatorial election. We await their public response to our request.
The petition will be sent to all Georgia gubernatorial candidates by September 30, 2006 and again in October before the November election. Join us by signing below. |

Make Poverty History in Georgia 2006 is not a formal organization. It is a grassroots effort to make poverty in our state an issue in the 2006 gubernatorial election.
Federal census data reveals that more than 1 million Georgians live in poverty. In some persistently poor counties as many as 1 in every 4 children and 1 in every 5 seniors are poor. Such a situation is not only morally wrong it is also a huge financial drain on our state's economy.
By signing the petition below you will join with thousands of other concerned Georgians to let our politicians know that we want them to make fighting poverty in Georgia a priority. Backed with the power of your signatures the campaign will ask all of the major gubernatorial candidates to sign a pledge to produce a plan to fight poverty in the state within 100 days of taking office. |
