Having seen a recent increase in violent crime on the area of Gordon's, Alma, Livingstone and Avenue Roads in Portswood, there is a real need for an improvement in street lighting on these roads. We aim to use this petition to show the council the need and demand for street lighting of the residents in this area. I think street lighting is a simple and obvious thing for the council to implement. The main points of the petition include: - Little lighting means that it is harder and more daunting to travel to and from homes in the area. - There has been an increase in crime in the area including burglaries of both residential properties and a local supermarket. - Increase in crime also includes an attack on a young woman and the beating of groups of students with chains, by men in cars as well as this employees of shops in Portswood have experienced attempted muggings and assaults on their way home. - Increased lighting will not only help residents and students alike but also the police. Increased lighting will allow them to patrol these areas more effectively as well as gain better witness accounts and descriptions from the public in cases of criminal activity. Already having the backing of the Swaytling Counsellor and the Counsellor for part of Portswood is good but the council need to know that we care! We will not only be getting signatures from students but the police and people living in the local area. I am setting them the deadline of 16/08/2011 to AT LEAST start work on it so we can see results before the end of this academic year!

it is genuinely terrifying walking home from university at night right now. i shouldn't have to be scared in my own neighborhood.

My daughter lives on Livingstone and i dont feel safe visiting her after dark. The council needs to stop dragging their feet.

The lighting on this side of Portswood is abysmal. Fix it before someone else gets hurt.
