Petition to have the legends wall re-errected at the Port club Alberton oval
In recent years it is no secret that the Post Adelaide Football Club has been making moves to broaden their membership/supporter base and are trying to attract people from a non SANFL Port Adelaide background to support the Power.
This is understandable and is definitely not a bad thing. However many supporters feel that in the process the feelings of the people who have supported this great club for countless years have in some respects been forgotten or ignored.
Distancing ourself from our SANFL history and emphasising so much on teal in order to not alienate new supporters has in many ways alienated the people who have helped this club get where it is today. This history pride, tradition and culture is the heart and soul of this club the essence of why it is the greatest Australian rules football club of all time.
If we, the true Port Adelaide supporters do not make a stance too much of who we really are as a club may eventually become lost forever.
One thing in particular that is of concern is that the legends wall that used to stand proud in our club rooms at Alberton has been removed and placed into storage. Many feel this is an insult to our history, our true supporters and first and for most for the great men who earnt their portrait on that mural. The same great men whom without there would be no Port Adelaide football club in the AFL.
This is more than a collection of paintings, a picture tells a thousand words and the pictures of these champions collectively tell the story of 137 years of remarkable success.
Many people and families used to love going to home games growing up and naming the faces on that wall and John Cahill and Gavin Wanganeen were the latest additions representing the first two legends to be added from our new chapter in the AFL. By now Warren Tredrea has more than earned his spot and having a more than deserved portrait of Chad Cornes along side the greats like Foss Williams and Scott Hodges to name a few would be a great contrast to show the evolution of our club.
If you are a Port member and or supporter and share similar feelings please unite and sign this petition your signature will help to have this wall re-erected and together it is up to us to ensure that the history and tradition is never going to be lost and will always continue.
Regards
Robin Tredrea Jr and Joseph Tredrea Jr
