The studio has confirmed that a remastered high definition transfer is officially scheduled for home media release. Legal teams reached an agreement this morning to clear the remaining rights issues. I will post the official catalog link here as soon as the preorder page goes live.

TO ALL WHO LOVED THIS MOVIE NOW AND THEN: IT HAS BEEN OVER 50 YEARS. THERE HAVE BEEN THOSE WHO HATED IT. AND THOSE WHO LOVED IT DEARLY.

WHETHER IT IS A TAINTING OF THE ORIGINAL OPERA, OR A REINVENTION I DO NOT KNOW. AND AFTER 50 YEARS, WHO CARES. ITS HISTORY, ITS HOLLYWOOD, ITS MOVIE MAGIC AT ITS BEST.

I AND THE OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALSO SIGNED THIS PETITON BELIEVE THAT ART SHOULD SURVIVE, AND PORGY AND BESS IS ART. THIS FILM SHOULD BE RELEASES TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC IN SOME FORM OF REMASTERED OR RESTORED CONDITION FOR HOME VIDEO MEDIA.

Updates

March 18, 2013

I have initiated contact with the rights holders to determine the specific legal barriers preventing a home media release. The current lack of response suggests we need to move toward a more formal inquiry regarding the licensing status of the film print. Updates on that outreach will follow once I receive a definitive status report.

This film is a masterpiece! I have seen it (don’t ask me how, but do search the web) in a very poor quality print, but one that does preserve the 2.20 aspect ratio at least. I would very happily pay my hard earned cash to both the Goldwyn & Gershwin estates to acquire a restored Blu Ray copy. Please work together to make this happen. This film is even more relevant today with the tensions inherent in modern society & as an appreciation of how people sadly suffered in the past through ignorance and bigotry. People would find this film very interesting (and yes, it’s STILL controversial). I can also tell you that it would get at least a 12 rating from the BBFC in the UK.

I think this movie is of Historical importance. Made at a time when some films were shot on large format and this Todd-AO 70mm 6-track audio soundtrack is definitely exceptional.

I saw this movie as a child & LOVED it. I check periodically to see if a miracle has occurred and I can see it one more time. Please!

This title is long overdue. As much as I do love "My Fair Lady" and "Oklahoma", the music for "Porgy and Bess" is still unbeatable and deserves at least the same consideration. And Andre Previn had the good taste and sensibility to lovingly supervise how the music should be adapted for the big screen, like he did with "My Fair Lady". There have been rumors that the Gershwin estate didn't like, or approve of the final film --- but they didn't seem to mind the latest Broadway trashing of the material.

thereis recent faded 70mm version with stereo sound track that was found in Germany,For example flicker alley could have that restored and released in smile box, hopefully with Gershwin estate permission

WHEN RELEASED IN 1959, IN ALL MAJOR MARKETS IT WAS RELEASED IN 70MM AND 6 TRACK SOUND. ITS A SHAME THAT THOSE PRINTS AND THE MASTER QUALITY SOUND WAS THERE AND NOW GONE. THE FILM ALSO HAD A FABULOUS OVERTURE BEFORE THE CREDITS STARTED AND IS NOW LOST FOREVER. RAINTREE COUNTY IS ANOTHER 70MM FILM LOST.

This movie needs to be released on home video, Classic an in it's own right, historic (certainly storied) film.
