Poppies Missing in Action
Each year, on the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we observe Remembrance Day across Canada. Every year Canadians gather in community halls, memorial parks, schools, living rooms and more to observe a moment of silence and to mark the sacrifice and honour of so many. The poppy has become the critical symbol for duty, valour, and self-sacrifice. Starting on the last Friday of October every year, we wear poppies with pride for our Veterans, but so too we wear them with the humble gratitude that we as a nation owe our Veterans. In the words of Royal Canadian Legion Dominion President Gordon Moore, "Remembrance Day is a day that we as a nation thank; honour and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is also a practical remembrance of the living - the disabled Veterans, RCMP members, widows, widowers, orphans and family members of those who served.” Why then, are broadcasters on CBC, CTV, and so many other Canadian stations, failing to wear the poppy, which has for more than 80 years been this national symbol? This petition is to call upon all those appearing on air on Canadian news networks to wear the poppy in the esteemed honour and protocol established by the Commander in Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces: from the day that the Governor General is pinned with the first ceremonial poppy until the 11th of November. The following counter will be updated each passing day that our Canadian media fail to live up to their role in setting an example for all Canadians: Days since on-air presenters on Canadian networks should have been wearing the poppy: 5 DAYS
