As many of you may know, the situation in Syria has reached critical mass. The UN’s peace deal has failed and the country is devolving into full on civil war. It is our duty as a national superpower to intervene and put an end to the humanitarian atrocities committed by the Syrian Government. Such atrocities include, but are not limited to, the death of 11000 Syrians, the nondiscriminatory torture of untried men, women, and children, and the use of psychological warfare to oppress the population. Such actions can not be tolerated by a nation of the modern era. Furthermore, Syria possesses many strategic advantages that make stabilizing the region favorable beyond the humanitarian reasons. The country controls coastline along the Mediterranean Sea as well as a large land border with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Iraq. More so than this, the Syrians contain many valuable resources including the major city of Damascus and on of the world’s largest oil reserves. Among all of these reasons, there must be one that sheds light on why action must be taken. We propose that the U.S. ceases trade entirely with Syria and encourages the U.N. to take whatever actions necessary to stabilize the region.
