A 30 year old male diagnosed with mild mental retardation and schizophrenia attended a day program while I(The 200% supportive mom) worked. Due to some type of government funding my son's program would no longer take one with 2 diagnoses. Getting the son into another program never happened as he does a lot of pacing due to the disorder. The other programs would not accept him on this account. We tried this med and that med and all we recieved was negative side effects. Pyschiatric medications are negative. the side effects are worst than the disorder itself. When I eventually lost our residence due to my having to stop working to care for him lead us into homelessness. There were no family shelters in Atlanta, Georgia where we could be together. We tried weekly hotels but the month was longer than the money. We resorted to rooms which each time we had to flee due to violence in the rooming house. We finally resorted to living in our storage unit until management became aware. We critcally needed a shelter where we could reside together. There are no family shelters such as this in Atlanta, GA. There are shelters for families with very young children and shelters for drug addicts, but none for our situation. Being from upstate New York originally, we moved to Brooklyn, NY where we found a family shelter where we could be together. I cannot work still until the son is in some type of program(New York is making this very difficult) I want to began college soon to become a Nutritionist/Dietician. Living in this shelter is very very very difficult for so many reasons. It is very very very stressful upon myself and my son. We need help to get housing as our incomes are currently low. Please sign our petition of our"Cry for help". Thanks to all.
