Name: Sheri Lucas, Graduate Student on May 14, 2011Comments: In addition to the inclusion here requested, I would also like to see those behind the Gourmet Report give far more attention to planning what specializations it is going to include and how they are categorized. The current list is heavily biased, is it not? It seems, for instance, that "applied ethics" is being used as a broad umbrella term to cover a staggering array of work, yet no such clumping occurs when it comes to (1) "the history of philosophy" or (2) "the philosophy of science." The former is given 9 stand-alone categories and the latter is given 6 stand-alone categories. Does it make sense to have a category for 17th Century Philosophy but not for the Philosophy of Education or for Bioethics? For 18th Century Philosophy and the Philosophy of Social Science but not for World Philosophy, which the list almost completely ignores? For Medieval Philosophy, Kant, and Mathematical Logic, but not for Philosophy for Children, Disability Studies, Environmental Ethics, Public Philosophy, or Critical Animal Studies? The most glaring omission, perhaps, is Metaphilosophy. Maybe the ongoing neglect of the Philosophy of Philosophy (in the field, as well as in the Gourmet Report) has something to do with the list being what it is, despite it being the early twenty-first century. People who turn to your list, curious about graduate school and thinking of a future in philosophy need a better idea of the options available to them. It seems that you have a fantastic opportunity to help advance and update the field. I hope you take it.Flag
