The current lack of a scheme is discriminatory to Private boat owners and the previous one exposed single handed sailors to unnecessary risks . private boat owners need to be accommodated now. Name: Peter Barrett on Mar 29, 2013Comments: It is easier, and less costly for Defra to do nothing, rather than for someone to apply their grey matter and make sensible provision for people other than those taking cars across the channel. More profitable for ferry companies to hide behind 'animal welfare' to try to force people into using a car.Flag

Name: Robert Wilson Thomas on Mar 30, 2013Comments: For very little change and additional administration, an unfortunate gap between the the carriage of an animal on board a private yacht and one transported on a commercial ferry may be plugged. There is no practical way to the carry an animal on board a private yacht. The recommended solution is for yachtsmen to avail themselves of cross channel routes as a foot passenger, accompanying a dog. This is no longer practical for returning an animal to the UK.. If I wish to take my dog with me, the only route available was P&O from Calais to Dover. P&O have just announced that they will no longer accept reservations for foot passengers with pets on their Calais Dover service. This means there is no way sailors can legally return to the UK with a pet. With ferry companies not willing to convey pets unless they are in cars it does seem that the options open to sailors with pets are totally unworkable and consequently there are no options. Unless DEFRA was minded to change the rules the likelihood is that many more crews will just sail home with their pet despite it not being legal and risk the pet being placed in quarantine and the owner being fined. As a proposal to resolve this position my suggestion is that:- 1. All pets sailing across the Channel to be required to have a pet passport, 2. All pets to be treated and checked by a vet in France prior to travel to the UK, 3. All owners to be required to e-mail DEFRA with their intended crossing date, their boat and pet details and their ETA into the UK and their port of entry. This information to be passed to the port of entry, 4. When all of the above has been completed pets should be allowed to travel on private boats, 5. On arrival in the UK all pets should remain securely on board in their port of entry until their pet passport has been checked. Checking of the pet passport to be done by a body other than the ferry company. This would require DEFRA to authorise other bodies to check pet passports in addition to the ferry companies. The threat to the UK can be minimised if these rules are followed. Without a change in the rules, the law is likely to be honoured more in the breach than in the observance. The UK is isolated in Europe. With the exception of Ireland, no other country places such restrictions on the free movement of animals. Respectfully I call on DEFRA to pursue a change in the regulations.Flag

Name: Christine Davis on Mar 30, 2013Comments: I sail single handed and enjoy the company of my dog when sailing, he is actually an extra pair of eyes and ears on board, he tells me when there are ships coming before I can see them. I am very much restricted in where I can sail because of the rules, and I could not risk getting caught out by the weather and having to seek shelter where I couldnt bring my dog home from.Flag

Name: David Dean on Mar 30, 2013Comments: Either we have an E U or we don't. Lets have a level playing field right across the E. U. - OR - "Slam the door shut" and look inwards. We've had plenty of that imposed on us by bigots, in our history. Plenty of wildlife gets across the channel as well as the worlds oceans. Why do we have to be treated as ignorant fools by incompetent organisations like DEFRA? Look at the latest - the wonderful "Common Fisheries Policy". Not a failure despite legislation, a failure because of legislation. Inmates are running the asylum it appears at times. How else would Europe and the Euro be in this mess?? Take great care how you vote. Regards DaveFlag
