We the Markham families and residents of the area affected by the proposed communication tower, petition the Town of Markham and Industry Canada to stop the erection of the proposed communication tower at its proposed location 2352 Middlefield Road site code ONTOR0282 due to; HEALTH We, our children who are our future, our parents, neighbors and visitors are all subject to multiple health risks because of this proposed telecommunications tower. In case of our young infants and children whose sensitive systems have not yet developed fully and our elderly whose health is fragile and vulnerable, this tower and its radiation presents even a dangerous proposition. We have collected multiple articles from many reliable academic and scentific sources, including but not limited to prestigious international organizations and international leaders in Health-related issues such as World Health Organization, IAFF and the Canadian Cancer Association, all of which point to several potential health hazards of such 24 hours radiation spewing tower. Although there is no absolute certainty that the proposed tower will adversely impact our community's health and welfare, there is enough uncertainty by mutliple reliable academic sources whose scientif research has pointed unequivocally to many health problems which could potentially be associated with the tower. AESTHETICS An industrial 25 meters (82 feet) telecommunication tower is incompatible with the residential neighborhood with no high rise structures. Landscaping around the cell tower will take decades to mature and never adequately screen the view of the tower. SAFETY A telecommunication tower increases the possibility of lightning strikes, thereby potentially causing the tower to collapse on the passerby’s, parked vehicles and on the nearby properties resulting in death, injuries and financial loss. It will also create blind-spot for traffic and hence increasing risk of accidents. PROPERTY VALUE According to the Appraisal Institute (the largest global professional membership organization for appraisers with 91 chapters throughout the world) presence of a cell tower negatively impacts property value of the homes. Our community refuses to be subjected to the long-term exposure risks this tower poses on the health and welfare of each and every person who is part of this community. This community requests the enforcement of City of Markham’s Policy for Establishing Telecommunication Facilities – under section Site Selection Criteria, “to maximize the distance from sensitive land uses such as residential, school and daycare where possible”. We therefore ask the Mayor and our representatives in City Hall, whom we have elected to represent us and to safeguard our welfare and health, to take ALL steps necessary to stop this project. The uncertainty of the potential health effects of this tower is high enough to warrant an immediate cessation of any plans to erect the tower in the middle of such a densely populated residential area.
