Dear President Barry, As President of the University of Limerick, and Chief Officer of the University's Governing Authority Board, we as students hope you and your colleagues on the Board will consider reviewing the unfortunate situation which recently occurred off campus near the University. As you have no doubt heard, it has been reported in several media outlets (and will likely be reported in several more) that students from UL were celebrating the end of the school year, and while doing so, purposely lured a small dog into harms way where it was hit by a car and died, which brought great amusement to the students. Sir, as students here at UL, we all sign a document agreeing to uphold the terms and conditions related to Code of Conduct under Section 6 of the university bylaws. After reviewing this document, we feel that the several conditions were clearly breached if the actions of these students as reported is in fact accurate. These conditions include (but are not necessarily limited to): Section 6- code of conduct 1.2 Members of the Campus Community shall: (a) Not engage in any conduct liable to or calculated to infringe the rights or lawful activities of others on the University Campus or otherwise engage in any activity calculated or likely to bring the University into disrepute, whether on the University property or otherwise. 1.5 Without prejudice to the matters herein before set out, it shall be deemed to be a Major Offence for any member of the Campus Community to: (f) Engage in conduct likely to bring the University into disrepute. (r) Abuse the use of alcohol so as to be incapable of exercising reasonable control over his/her behaviour. 1.6 It shall be deemed to be a Minor Offence for any member of the Campus Community to: (b) Engage in disorderly conduct on or off campus We understand that the situation has only recently been reported, and it will take time for the University (and possibly the Garda) to thoroughly investigate the details. However, we students feel that this incident is a terrible black eye for the perception of the University of Limerick, and hope that you will both investigate this as comprehensively as possible, and if applicable, will uphold your bylaws and bring strong discipline against those responsible for their actions. By doing so, the University will demonstrate its steadfast commitment to enforcing its bylaws, and students will in turn know that consequences will result if a severe breach of these bylaws occurs.
