This is a petition by the members of Stoa for the Stoa Board to reconsider its proposed resolutions for the 2013-2014 Team Policy debate season. We are offering this petition not as a rejection of the Stoa model, but an endorsement of it. In very few other forensics leagues could the competitors ever hope to accomplish what we intend to. It is a recognition of Stoa’s laudable ability to respond to the concerns of its membership that the signatories feel justified in petitioning the Board to change its policies. We believe that the current topics are irrelevant to the biggest issues facing our world today. The purpose of Team Policy is to educate debaters not just about how to speak well and out-reason opposing arguments, but to teach competitors about the major policy problems their world confronts. None of the resolutions meet that criteria. Further, we believe that these topics give a definite disincentive to compete in the league. If a family is given a chance to join Team Policy debate competition regarding a topic America wrestles with on a consistent basis, they will be drawn to competition. However, these ultra-specific topics are areas national discussion rarely revolves around. There are many other faults these resolutions face as well (the constitutional ability of the United States government to significantly reform policies in the resolutions, and a lack of viable cases that fulfill them). We believe that there are multiple ways to create resolutions that are more debatable, more interesting, and more educational for the league. The board could: a) Introduce three new resolutions to replace the current suggestions. b) Switch out one or two resolutions for a more profitable topic as proposed by the general membership of the league. c) Create a write-in process for other general topics the membership would like to debate, and then create a committee to turn the top three topics into resolutions, which would then be voted on. A signature does not imply a support for any one of these methods, but we propose these alternatives to prove that there are multiple solutions to the problem of creating a new set of resolutions. Sign below if you are Resolved: the Stoa Board should substantially reform its Team Policy resolutions.
