Dear President Obama: We,the undersigned men (and women who love them) urge you to begin praising and advocating for half the other half of the world: males. We are tired of watching guys being mocked on Father's Day. Mothers are not maligned on THEIR day; why should fathers be on theirs? We resent the legal, political, and media biases currently in effect against men. Divorced fathers should not suddenly become "visitors" to their children because their exes are "unhappy". Nor should fathers be viewed as ATMs, dumped by former wives save for dollars. We no longer think women belong only in homes. Why do we act like males belong only OUTSIDE homes. For the past 50 years female lives have expanded. However, most of the focus has been on women's rights, not their new obligations. On the other hand, male lives have not only contracted, they have been burdened with more and more obligations. The center cannot hold. Already we are seeing men opting out of both higher education and marriage. Why? Neither is worth it for men. The penalties are too high for men who are more and more seen as expendable, if not the source of all evil. Who says children do not need fathers? Endless studies show that kids raised without dads do worse. Who says men evicted unilaterally from their families feel no pain? Would we sit still if a loving mother was suddenly banished to a motel, forced to pay onerous bills for off-spring she was rarely permitted to see? Who says today's thoroughly modern woman still "owns" children? If a woman can become a CEO and combat grunt, she can share custody and pay half the bills. The days of coddling frail, vapors-susceptible Victorian damsels is over.
