A judge threw a 17-year-old 11th grade honor student from Willis High School in jail after she missed school again. Judge Lanny Moriarty said last month Diane Tran was in his Justice of the Peace court for truancy and he warned her then to stop missing school. But she recently missed classes again so Wednesday he issued a summon and had her arrested in open court when she appeared. Tran said she works a full-time job, a part-time job and takes advanced placement and dual credit college level court. She has classes like: - Dual Credit US History - Dual Credit English Literacy - College Algebra - Spanish III AP Not only that but she has a heavy load in life. Ever since her parents divorced and moved away, she has been carrying for a brother at Texas AMN and a little sister with relatives in Huston. Appeal this to the highest court! Give her a break!! She's working Full time and Part time to help support her family and taking both AP & dual enrollment college classes, getting Honors, no less while there are students who go to school or skip school and daydream at best or fall asleep in class or goof off at worst, don't pay attention, don't do their homework, and could care less. In my opinion, I'm sure there are many colleges who would pay her a full scholarship, but seriously shame on this judge! There is a real problem in this country about teenagers, even younger overworked between school, work, sports & clubs. We all need a breather! Serious sleep deprivation in this country is a major health issue, from falling asleep at the wheel to accidents on the job to bad effects on physical and mental health in general. This girl is doing her best and that judge should not be punishing her to set some kind of example but be asking himself how he and other adults can help her and many others like her. I have never met this girl, but a problem like that should never be treated with ignorance. Diane deserves a better outcome of the situation, because with all the efforts she puts, it seems unreasonable to have a record, with such outstanding grades. Please sign this petition and show it with your friends. We can make a difference in a life that deserves so much more. And hopefully if we get 5,000 people to sign it, the Judge could change his mind about the sentence given to Diane Tran. Thank you
