This petition is for the Tempe Union High School District to revise the Dress Code as stated in the School Handbook.

The current school dress code is as follows:

Guidelines: Pants, Skirts, Shorts, etc.
-Sagging is not allowed. The waistband of the pants, shorts or skirt must meet the bottom of the shirt or top at all times (i.e. standing, sitting, etc.). Pants should not drag excessively on the ground.
-Shorts and skirts must pass the “pointer finger” rule, which means that they may be not shorter than where the student’s pointer finger touches the leg when the arm is hanging straight down.
-Pants, shorts, or skirts must cover underwear at all times.
-Stretch pants must be worn with proper covering.

Guidelines: Shirts, Tops, Blouses, etc.
-Proper dress for boys will include shirts with sleeves (no tank tops).
-No midriff, back skin, or side skin showing. In other words, shirts and other tops must meet the pants/slacks/skirts with no exposure of abdomen, back or side.
-Not permitted: strapless tops, tube tops, racer backs, halter tops, or one-strap tops. No bustiers or tops with spaghetti straps. Straps must be at least two fingers in width and/or 1-3/4” wide covering all undergarments. No see-through shirts or necklines that expose any cleavage.
-Students may not layer inappropriate shirts to attempt to make an appropriate one. (Strapless top over men’s undershirt top, camisole over a racer back top, unbuttoned long sleeve shirt over men’s undershirt, etc.) Two wrongs don’t make a right!
-Underwear may not show (boxers, briefs, thongs, bras, etc.), and underwear and sleepwear worn as outerwear (i.e. camisoles, men’s undershirts, or pajama pants) are not permitted.

Inappropriate Dress:
-Attire or accessories which advertise, display, and/or promote drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gang activity, violence, sexual activity, disrespect, lewd, vulgar, or obscene language, and/or bigotry toward any group or person are forbidden.
-Body piercing that is a safety hazard and/or hinders classroom performance is not allowed.
-Shoes must be worn at all times according to Arizona State law. For safety, shoes must have an outdoor sole (i.e. no bedroom slippers).
-Sunglasses may not be worn in school buildings.

Here is what I would like to change:

All inappropriate dress rules should not be changed, as they are equal for both genders and understandable.

Guidelines: Pants, Skirts, Shorts, etc.
No more pointer finger rule as it is different for all people, arm length should not determine whether or not someone can wear something.
My Revision: As long as when you bend over you can't see the individual's behind, I see no problem.

Guidelines: Shirts, Tops, Blouses, etc.
No more "no tank tops for either gender," we live in Arizona it is hot for most of the year.
My Revision: Allow both genders to wear tank tops, regardless of what they look like, unless it has something otherwise inappropriate on it.

Get rid of the "no racerback, spaghetti straps, or halter tops," I can understand tops without any straps as it can fall off and you constantly are pulling it up, plus there will always be that one person who thinks it's hilarious to pull someone's top down.
My Revision: Racerbacks, spaghetti straps, and halter tops are all allowed as long as the cups of the bra and the back band of the bra are not showing, straps are there for support not to harm anyone.

No layering shirts?
My Revision: If it makes an appropriate shirt by these standards, layer away.

No see-through shirts or necklines that expose cleavage.
My Revision: Women don't have control over how large or small their breasts are, it's a crease in the middle of two pockets of fat, no one is going to be killed by being exposed to it, it's a natural part of the female anatomy and should be treated as such. Cleavage is allowed, as long as the areola is not shown nor the cups of the bra.

Underwear may not show.
My Revision: No panties, boxers, briefs, or thongs should be seen. However, once again I do not see the harm in a piece of fabric holding up another piece of fabric.

This is what I would like to change, please sign below if you agree, thank you:
