We oppose mass incarceration in the United States for the following reasons: The US has 5% of the world's population but 25% of the world's incarcerated population. There are approx. 7.5million individuals in jails, prisons, or under some form of correctional supervision in the US criminal justice system with approx. 2.5million individuals behind bars in the US and with the largest amount of those between the ages of 15 to 29 years old. Mass incarceration lead to increase in poverty, illiteracy, the breakdown of family structures, the breakdown of communities and increase in community insecurity. At the end of 2010, two of the largest private prisons corporation in America: GEO and Correction Corporation of America made close to $3billion. Warehousing individuals for profiteering at the expense of community security is not being smart on crime. Solution: Holistic Approach to Reducing Mass Incarceration: Pre-prison: Emphasis on job creation, Education & Sentencing reform. Prison: Emphasis on Rehabilitation and Skills development Post-prison: Emphasis on Employment and Training
