Name: Andrew Nicola on Apr 17, 2008Comments: After researching, learning, and keeping marine invertebrates for over 8 years, I can assure you that it requires a professional in caring for precious marine life forms, weather it be in an public aquarium, private, or commercial. Many of these professionals are amatures that begin as hobbyists and soon learn the science of applying techniques to insure a proper environment that enhances health, and leads to captive propegation. It is in this way that educated individuals and aquarium clubs have contributed to combat the degradation of natural reef habitats. It is only rarely that a member of this community will purchase the dilapitated live stock available from mass market retailers such as Petco. But if retailers continue to order imported live stock and distribute it to individuals who are, because of a lack of proper education on the topic, unable to keep these animals alive, then the impact of the professional and hobbyist community is scarcely recognizable. It is an animal rights disgrace, a blight against the environment, and a slap in the face to professionals like myself who take pride in their years of research, labor, and experience with these animals, to allow these companies to rape the oceans of its precious life for the enhancement of profits. Strict licensing criteria must be developed and enforced nationally to prevent these atrocities from continuing. Sincerely, Andy LongFlag

Name: Jeff Reed on Apr 17, 2008Comments: It's a shame that the only thing that Petco's are concerned about when it comes to saltwater fish, corals or inverts is the bottom line and making money instead of caring for each individual coral, clam, fish or invert that they have purchased. It's a shame to see that they just dump these living animals into any unforgiving tank environment they can find in their stores without even knowing how to care for the animals. If Petco would take the time to learn and teach their employees about the care requirements of the corals, inverts and fish then they can live long fruitful lives as they should be living in the wild on the reefs of the oceans.Flag

Name: Curtis Johnson on Apr 18, 2008Comments: I am one of the original contributers to this petition and I must say that this issue is one that must be addressed. Every time I enter the local Petco I am amazed at the amount of death and disease that is in those tanks. Today I went into the store and took pictures to document the conditions of the Petco, and when I was asked if I needed help, I told him i was just looking. I said that I had a friend that just set up a tank today and he said he would sell me fish for it. I asked about a tang, a boxfish, and a grouper. I told him the tank was set up today, and it was a 20 gallon. He was willing to sell me those three fish, and it wasn't even my tank. This is not even my biggest concern. I cannot believe the amount of corals that are kept there under minimal lighting. Every coral, polyp, mushroom, anemone, and anything else photosynthetic, was dying. Please read this and take action, even if it just you, a customer, who wants to make a difference, not only for yourself, but for the future of these animals.Flag

Name: Lauren Brown on Apr 18, 2008Comments: I have seen this first hand, have bought livestock from Petco, and have sorely regretted it. I hope this petition makes a difference. I have never encountered an employee of this company that knows much about marine aquariums, and they have them in their store! Someone should know enough at least to keep the tanks healthy. Sad, sad situation.Flag

Name: Erin McGarry on Apr 18, 2008Comments: Petco is deplorable. The conditions of the animals in their care, whether marine or terrestrial, is excruciating to watch. There should be respect for the animals that just isn't there. All of you at Corporate should be ashamed of yourselves.Flag
